Text RPG AI stories with real game rules

Tell the story. The world keeps score.

Act in your own words while a real game engine tracks everything that matters: your stats, gear, quests, dice rolls and the people you meet. Your adventure stays consistent, whether it lasts an evening or a whole season.

How it works

Three steps to your first scene

No rulebooks to learn. Type what you want to do and the game handles the numbers.

  1. Choose a world, or build one

Pick a ready-made scenario in any genre, then create your character and class before the first scene. Prefer your own setting? Start one from scratch in the editor.

  2. Act in your own words

Every turn, pick how you want to shape the scene and write it however you like.

    • Do act
    • Say speak
    • Story narrate
    • Guide steer the AI
    • See picture it
  3. The world remembers

Items land in your inventory, quests update, wounds stay wounded. The story reacts to what actually happened, and you can rewind to any turn to try another path.

Features

A storyteller with a rulebook behind it

Most AI stories forget what happened three pages ago. RPGCortex keeps a real game state alongside the prose, so the AI narrates from facts, not guesses.

Real game state

Stats, inventory, characters, quests and reputation live in the engine and update as the story unfolds.

Dice that mean it

Risky moves can call for a check against Easy, Medium, Hard or Very Hard difficulties. The roll happens on the server, with your stats and class as modifiers.

Turn-based combat

Encounters run on initiative, armor and hit points. The engine decides every hit; the AI brings it to life.

Level up

Earn XP from deeds and finished quest objectives, then climb your class’s level table as the adventure goes on.

State Cards

Characters, places, factions, items and lore are written down once and brought into the scene when they matter, so the world stays itself.

Memory Bank

Past moments are saved as memories and the relevant ones are recalled each turn, while a rolling story summary keeps long campaigns on track.

Branching timelines

Rewind to any turn and take a different path. The road not taken is kept, not erased, so you can hop back to it later.

Pictures & narration

Use See to paint the current scene as an AI image, give your worlds AI-made covers, and have the story read aloud in a voice you pick.

Under the hood

The prose is the AI’s. The facts are the engine’s.

When you attempt something risky, the engine rolls first and the AI narrates the result it was handed. When you pick something up, it goes into an inventory you can see. Nothing depends on the model remembering to keep track.

  • Checks and combat rolls come from the engine, not the storyteller.
  • Your character sheet updates live beside the story.
  • Prefer pure storytelling? Scenarios can switch the mechanics off.
  • Quest progress and faction reputation are tracked by the engine as you play.

The ash swallows your footsteps. The sentry turns a moment too late, squinting into the grey as you drop behind the rocks, and there, half-buried in cinders, lies a dented brass lantern still warm to the touch.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is RPGCortex really free?

Yes. The Novice plan costs nothing, needs no card, and comes with 100 starter credits that never expire. The free models don’t use credits, so you can keep playing after those are spent. Upgrade if you want monthly credits, longer context or a bigger Memory Bank.

What are credits used for?

Credits pay for extras: AI scene images, story context beyond what your plan includes, and any model or option that shows a credit cost. The models your plan unlocks don’t cost credits to use.

Do I need to know tabletop RPG rules?

Not at all. You describe what you do in plain words; the game rolls the dice, does the math and shows you the result. Some scenarios skip mechanics entirely for pure storytelling.

How does it keep long stories consistent?

Three layers work together: a tracked game state (stats, items, quests), State Cards describing the people and places in your world, and a Memory Bank plus a running story summary that bring older events back when they matter.

What if the story goes somewhere I don’t like?

Retry a turn for a different take, use Guide to nudge where things go next, or rewind to any earlier turn and branch off. Your other timeline stays saved.

Can I play with friends?

Yes. Invite friends into an adventure, each with their own character. Players take turns in order, and there’s a group chat for out-of-character talk.

Can I create and publish my own scenarios?

Yes. The scenario editor lets you write the plot and opening, add State Cards, attach a script and a cover, then publish it for others to play.

Who can play, and how do I sign in?

You need a Google account and must be at least 13 years old (players under 18 need a parent or guardian’s permission — see our Terms of Service). Mature-rated content is only available to players 18 and over, based on the birthdate you enter at sign-up. We never see or store your password.
